The Cave
The night went by peacefully and they were each able to get plenty of rest. At breakfast Kael asked how much turtle soup could be made from such a beast. Maligaant and the squad got a good laugh from that and spent perhaps 40 minutes in a strange debate on the subject.
About half of the second day was spent making their way up a series of waterfalls among which were many ancient ruins. The inhabitants of the ruins were long gone and while it wasn't clear what had happened to them, the presence of more than a few skeletons showed evidence of gnawing on the bones.
"I wonder what made these." Zan said, as he ran his paw over a series of deep grooves.
Moving up to Zan, Toby looked closely at the grooves, "Appear to have been made by some sort of slashing weapon by the pattern of them." he said.
A sharp whistle from Kraspen brought the entire squad to alert. He was just out of sight beyond a couple of crumbling walls. They quickly made their way to his location, just outside of a cave.
Maligaant moved up to Krasp's side, "What is it?"
"Movement. And I don't think it's friendly, whatever it is." Krasp responded.
Maligaant turned and motioned to the squad with his paws then turned back to Krasp and tapped him on the shoulder, "Ready when you are."
They moved into the cave in a tight circular formation with Krasp at point.
They didn't have to travel more than a few meters before it became distinctly obvious that these caves were inhabited. Perhaps only 35 or 40 meters into the cave and they began defensively shooting large insectoid like creatures. This began a fairly intense battle as the interior of the cave lit up with light from blaster fire against wave after wave of increasingly large insects. Just as the waves seemed to stop and the blaster fire subsided, the cave began to quake with the sound of something lumbering up from the depths.
"Sir?" Kraspen asked as he looked to Maligaant for direction, his eyes showing concern.
"Everyone get out! Now!" Mal roared as the squad ran for the cave exit.
